Peak supplements and blackout dates: the 2027 surcharge map
Chinese New Year, Nyepi, Songkran and Golden Week each carry their own 2027 surcharge and stop-sell dates. Check the calendar before you quote.
Jökulsárlón · 21:30Quote a Bali or Bangkok package for the first week of February 2027 off last year's net rate sheet, and you're already quoting the wrong number. Peak supplements and blackout dates aren't a footnote a DMC adds later. They're a second price list sitting on top of the one you were sent, and if you didn't ask for it in writing, you probably don't have it.
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on 6 February, the Year of the Goat (Wikipedia). That single date drags peak pricing across most of Southeast Asia through roughly the first three weeks of February, right inside the window when Indian operators are pushing "off-peak, value" outbound deals. Get the calendar wrong here and the loss shows up after you've already confirmed a price.
This post lays out the fixed festival dates that move Southeast Asian and Japanese pricing in 2027, the ones still only estimates, and the three lines you need in writing from every DMC and hotel before you sign.
Why your net rate sheet is only half the contract
A net rate without a surcharge and blackout calendar attached to it is an incomplete price, not a wrong one. The rate is real. It's just not the rate that applies on the dates your client actually wants to travel.
DMCs and hotels build peak pricing and no-booking windows around local festivals, and they don't always volunteer that calendar with the rate sheet. You get a clean per-pax number in January, quote it against a February trip, and only discover the CNY supplement when you try to confirm rooms, by when you've already told the client a price. Ask for the calendar at the same time you ask for the rate, not after.
The three clauses to get in writing before you sign
Before signing a DMC or hotel contract for 2027 travel, get three things confirmed in writing: the exact peak-supplement dates, the exact stop-sell dates, and whether any supplement is charged per room or per person per night.
What is a peak season supplement? An extra charge a hotel or DMC adds on top of the base net rate for stays inside a defined high-demand window, usually tied to a festival, holiday or school break. It can be a flat amount, a percentage, or a different rate card entirely.
What is stop sell in hotels? A block of dates on which a hotel or DMC won't accept new bookings at all, regardless of rate, because the property expects to sell out at full retail without agent allotment. It's not a price increase. It's a closed door until the dates pass or inventory is released.
The clause that catches operators most often is the pricing basis. Ask a DMC "what's the peak supplement for these dates" without specifying, and several will default to per person per night, the costlier basis for a family or group booking. Get it stated as ₹X per room or ₹X per person per night, in the contract, not a WhatsApp message that gets scrolled past. It's worth reading how hotel rate contracts should be structured so the clause sits inside a document that already protects you on allotment and release terms.
When is Chinese New Year 2027?
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, 6 February, marking the start of the Year of the Goat (Wikipedia). Unlike the lunar Islamic festivals further down this list, CNY follows a deterministic calendar, so this date is fixed, not subject to later confirmation.
The pricing impact runs wider than the holiday itself. Chinese domestic and diaspora travel spikes around CNY, and destinations with heavy Chinese arrivals, Bangkok, Phuket, Bali, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong and Macau among them, see peak supplements and stop-sells stretch across roughly the first three weeks of February. That range is this post's own reasoned framing around the confirmed date, not a figure quoted by any DMC, so treat it as illustrative and get exact dates for your properties in writing. It collides directly with the Indian outbound calendar: January-February is when operators quote "value" Southeast Asia trips against off-peak assumptions, precisely the fortnight CNY turns into peak.
Bali's Nyepi: not a surcharge, a full shutdown
What is Nyepi and why does Bali close? Nyepi is Bali's Day of Silence, a Hindu new year observance on the Balinese Saka calendar during which the entire island stops: no work, no travel, no lights, no noise, for 24 hours. It isn't a hotel pricing event. It's a day nobody, tourist or resident, is allowed to move.
Nyepi 2027 falls on 9 March (Wikipedia). Because it follows the Saka calendar rather than a fixed Gregorian date, it shifts every year and needs checking annually, not assumed from the prior year.
On the day itself, Bali's only airport, Ngurah Rai, closes completely for a full 24 hours (6am to 6am), and residents and tourists alike are barred from streets and beaches island-wide. Violators can face deportation or prosecution.
Careful: Don't route a client's arrival or departure through Bali on or near 9 March 2027. Flights simply don't operate that day. Rebuild the itinerary around it: land a day earlier, or push the Bali leg to start after Nyepi clears, and brief the client they'll be confined to their hotel for the day if already on the ground.
Songkran, Golden Week and Obon: Southeast Asia and Japan's other peaks
When is Songkran 2027? Thailand's core Songkran public holiday is fixed at 13-15 April every year (Wikipedia). But the government has repeatedly extended the wider celebration window in recent years, in 2024 the festivities ran from 1 to 21 April, so the stop-sell impact on Thai hotels typically runs longer than the three-day holiday itself. Confirm the current-year window with your DMC rather than assuming 13-15 April is the whole story.
Japan has two squeezes a year, and only one is fixed. Golden Week runs Showa Day (29 April) through Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day (3-5 May) (Wikipedia); a holiday falling on a Sunday shifts a substitute day in, so check each year rather than assume the block stays four days. Obon, the mid-year homecoming holiday, has no single national date: most of the country observes it around 15 August, while Tokyo observes it a month earlier, around 15 July (Wikipedia).
China's own National Day Golden Week (Wikipedia) begins around 1 October and typically runs 7-8 days once weekends are rescheduled around it, also driving demand into Southeast Asia. Exact 2027 dates weren't confirmed in sources checked as of August 2026; verify with China's State Council holiday notice closer to the date.
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha: dates that move earlier every year
Islamic calendar festivals shift roughly 10-11 days earlier each Gregorian year, so neither Eid date for 2027 can be stated with CNY-level certainty this far out. Eid al-Fitr 2027 is estimated around 9-11 March, but the exact date depends on moon sighting and is confirmed only close to the event (Wikipedia). Eid al-Adha 2027 has no confirmed date in sources checked; based on the current Islamic year 1448 AH running roughly mid-June 2026 to early June 2027, it should land somewhere in May 2027, a derived estimate, not a published date (Wikipedia).
Both dates carry real pricing weight in Gulf and Southeast Asian Muslim-majority markets, Malaysia, Indonesia and parts of Thailand among them. Hold the peak-supplement clause open until the DMC confirms dates closer to the season, rather than locking a number against an estimate this early. Umrah season carries a steeper version of this problem; see the 2027 Ramadan-Umrah sourcing playbook if that's part of your book.
Christmas-New Year and the Indian outbound peaks DMCs also surcharge
The other universal peak, needing no lunar calculation, is 24 December to 3 January. Nearly every DMC and hotel across Southeast Asia, the Gulf and Europe builds a surcharge or stop-sell around it, and most operators price for it out of habit.
Diwali is a newer addition to some DMCs' peak calendars, driven by rising Indian outbound volume. Diwali 2027 falls on 29 October (Wikipedia). Whether a given Bali, Thailand or Vietnam DMC actually surcharges Diwali week depends on that market's exposure to Indian arrivals, there's no blanket rule as with CNY or Christmas. Ask the DMC directly.
The worked example: a Bali quote that missed the CNY calendar
Example: An operator drafts a Bali quote in December for a family of four travelling 5-9 February 2027, off a standard villa rate of ₹9,500 per room per night received in November. The trip is priced, confirmed to the client, and an advance is collected.
Three weeks out, the operator locks rooms with the DMC and learns the villa carries a CNY peak supplement of ₹3,500 per room per night for 3-10 February, a window that was never on the original rate sheet or asked about. Across four nights that's ₹14,000 of unbudgeted cost on one room, more with two.
The client has already been quoted a flat number. The operator either eats the ₹14,000 out of margin, or goes back to a client who's already paid an advance asking for more, the harder of the two conversations.
The fix isn't better negotiating after the fact. It's checking the peak calendar before the quote goes out, the same way you'd check hotel allotment and release terms before confirming any group block. A quote built on a rate sheet with no surcharge dates attached isn't a complete quote yet.
Building your own 2027 surcharge map
The practical fix is a running log, not a memory exercise redone every quoting season. For each DMC or hotel contract you sign through the year, capture:
- Destination and property or DMC name
- Peak supplement dates (start and end)
- Stop-sell dates, if any, separate from the supplement dates
- Supplement basis: per room per night, or per person per night
- Supplement amount or percentage
- Source: which contract clause or email confirms this, and the date it was confirmed
Keep it on one sheet across all 2027 contracts, sorted by date rather than destination, so a February Bangkok-Bali combination shows both legs sitting inside the CNY window at a glance instead of the overlap getting missed. It's the same instinct behind tracking forex buffers into outbound quotes, applied to calendar risk instead of currency risk.
Common questions
What are blackout dates in travel?
Blackout dates are a period during which a supplier, a hotel, DMC or airline, won't honour a standard rate or, in the stricter version, won't accept a booking at all. They're set around expected high demand: a festival, a holiday, a school break. The term covers both the "pay more" version (peak supplement) and the "can't book" version (stop sell), and contracts should be explicit about which applies to which dates.
How far in advance should I book for Chinese New Year travel?
There's no fixed answer, but with CNY 2027 falling on 6 February and pricing pressure building through the preceding weeks, confirming hotel and DMC contracts well before the December-January quoting rush gets you a real net rate instead of whatever's left once peak pricing has already kicked in.
The short version
- CNY 2027 falls Saturday, 6 February. Peak supplements and stop-sells typically stretch across roughly early-to-mid February in Bangkok, Phuket, Bali, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong and Macau, but confirm exact dates per contract.
- Nyepi 2027 falls 9 March. Bali's airport closes for 24 hours and nobody moves island-wide. This is a stop-sell, not a supplement, so rebuild the itinerary rather than re-quote it.
- Get three clauses in writing before signing any 2027 DMC or hotel contract: exact peak-supplement dates, exact stop-sell dates, and whether the supplement is per room or per person per night.
- Songkran's core holiday is fixed at 13-15 April, but past celebration windows have run longer (1-21 April in 2024). Japan's Golden Week (29 April-5 May) and Obon (mid-July Tokyo, mid-August elsewhere) are the country's two squeezes.
- Eid al-Fitr 2027 is estimated around 9-11 March and Eid al-Adha around May 2027, both moon-sighting dependent. Don't lock a quote against these estimates without reconfirming closer to the date.
- Diwali 2027 falls 29 October. Whether a DMC surcharges it is destination-specific, so ask rather than assume.
- Log every contract's peak dates, supplement basis and stop-sell window as you sign it through the year, so you're checking a sheet, not memory, when a quote lands.
