How GST works on what you sell

A tour package is billed at 5% of the full price with no input tax credit, or at 18% with credit. On 5%, the GST your hotels and transporters charge you is part of your cost, so price it in. Choosing between 5% and 18%.

Hotel rooms are rated on the actual price charged per room per night. Cab or coach hire with fuel is 5% without input credit or 18% with it, and your own service fee or commission is 18%. GST rate card for tour operators.

A visa fee you pay to the embassy or visa centre on the client's authorisation, recover at actual cost and show separately stays outside your taxable value; your facilitation fee is 18%. GST on visa fees.

Overseas packages also carry TCS: the TCS calculator works it out for each payment, with or without PAN. Air tickets have their own air ticket GST calculator, and the SAC code finder gives the code for each invoice line.

Questions operators ask

What is the GST rate on a tour package?

5% on the full package price with no input tax credit (except on tour operator services bought from another tour operator), when the bill includes stay and transport and states it is the gross amount. Or 18% with full input tax credit. These are the rates notified from 22 Sep 2025.

Is GST charged on international tour packages sold in India?

Yes. An overseas package sold to a customer in India attracts Indian GST on the package value. From 1 April 2026, TCS of 2% is also collected on every payment, worked out on the amount including GST (5% if the traveller hasn't given a PAN, none if the buyer has deducted TDS on that payment). GST is not charged on TCS.

What GST does a hotel charge on rooms?

₹7,500 or less per room per night: 5%, and the hotel cannot claim input credit. Above ₹7,500: 18%. The test uses the actual price charged for each room for each night.

What is the GST on cab or coach hire?

Hiring a cab, tempo traveller or coach with fuel included is 5% with no input credit, or 18% with input credit. Check which of the two is on the operator's bill.

How do I take GST out of a price that already includes it?

Divide by 1.05 for 5% or by 1.18 for 18% to get the price before GST; the difference is the GST. ₹94,500 including 5% GST is ₹90,000 plus ₹4,500 GST.

Is GST charged on a visa fee?

Not on the embassy or visa-centre fee itself when you pay it as the client's pure agent: on their authorisation, recovered at actual cost and shown separately on the invoice. That fee is then not part of your taxable value. Your own visa facilitation fee carries 18%.

When does a travel agency need GST registration?

GST registration is needed once your turnover in a financial year crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura). Without a GSTIN you can't charge GST. Under the composition scheme you issue a Bill of Supply and can't charge GST to customers.
