Questions operators ask
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a percent of your cost. Margin is profit as a percent of the selling price. A package that costs ₹1,00,000 and sells for ₹1,20,000 has a 20% markup but a 16.67% margin.
How do I convert markup to margin?
Margin = markup ÷ (100 + markup) × 100. A 25% markup is a 20% margin. Going the other way, markup = margin ÷ (100 − margin) × 100.
Should I calculate markup before or after GST?
Before. Work out your price on your cost, then add GST on top; GST you collect is not your profit. On the 5% package rate, count supplier GST as part of your cost, because you cannot claim it back.
Why can a margin never reach 100%?
A 100% margin would mean your cost is zero. Any real cost needs a margin below 100%, while markup can go above 100%.
